The new weapon in the war against wrinkles.

What is BOTOX® and how does it work?

BOTOX® is the abbreviated name for Botulinus toxin, a chemical that can inhibit stimulation to muscles.

Wrinkles. Recently, Botox® has become a state-of-the-art approach to treating unappealing forehead wrinkles and crows’ feet. We know that repetitive motion or contraction of the underlying muscles causes facial wrinkles. However, with the advent of Botox’s use in cosmetic surgery, we can promote weakness in these muscles, so that they produce fewer contractions, thereby reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Although this procedure is not a permanent solution to this cosmetic dilemma, its effects may last up to five months. More importantly, it is a relatively quick and simple procedure. Most patients are completely satisfied with the results and experience very few unfavorable side effects. Call us for more information about getting BOTOX® in Houston, TX.

The results of BOTOX® treatment start to appear in three to ten days. The treated muscles will gradually regain their action over three to five months. When the frown line starts to reappear, a simple repeat treatment is all that is necessary to maintain the desired results.

BOTOX® therapy should only be performed under the direction of a physician experienced and trained in the use of BOTOX®. Dr. Kelly has 7 years of experience using BOTOX® therapy for wrinkles in the forehead and crow’s feet.

BOTOX® has been used since 1980 for the treatment of strabismus (lazy eye), and blepharospasm (uncontrolled eye blinking). BOTOX® has been used for hyperfunctional facial lines since 1989. Major reviews of BOTOX® therapy have been published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery.

As with any injection there can be temporary pain, swelling, redness, bruising, headache or local discomfort. The side effects are mainly related to the effect of BOTOX® on local muscles. Rarely, patients have been reported to develop a slight lowering of an eyelid (ptosis), or slight lowering of the forehead. This is temporary and resolves in a few weeks. Some patients may have an uneven or incomplete response to treatment. BOTOX® does reduce the action of the muscles of facial expression. Patients with neuromuscular disorders should inform their doctor before treatment. BOTOX® therapy should not be administered during pregnancy.
