(Follow your instructions carefully.  Failure to do so could seriously affect the outcome of your surgery.)

After Surgery

  • It is usually more comfortable to sleep with your head elevated for first few days.
  • You must return to the office the day after surgery to have your chest dressing removed. Please have someone bring you to this office visit.
  • DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN based products for seven to ten days after surgery for they will thin the blood.  Acetaminophen (Tylenol) may be taken instead.
  • If you have drains in your incisions, they will come out the day after surgery.
  • In general, if you are female, a bra is to be worn day and night for the first three weeks after surgery.
  • You will experience a moderate amount of swelling for three weeks after surgery.  Usually by 3-6 weeks, the majority of your swelling will have subsided.
  • Do not shower until your stitches are removed.  Sponge bathe only.  DO NOT sit in a tub  of water.
  • You must refrain from heavy lifting, jogging, aerobicising or any strenuous activity for three weeks following your surgery.
  • If you have any questions or problems, please contact the office at (281) 444-5172.
  • It is critical that you drink some fluids and eat something (such as soup or crackers or whatever you can tolerate) as soon as you recover from anesthesia.  Your body needs the nutrition for healing, and you should have something in your stomach while taking your pain medication.
  • No sunbathing or use of tanning beds until told you may do so.
